5 Take a Break

The Geysir Center houses a massive restaurant (mains Ikr1490 to Ikr2450), cafe (mains Ikr1480 to Ikr2000) and fast-food joint (Ikr990 to Ikr1690).

Across the street, the restaurant at Hótel Geysir (%480 6800; www.geysircenter.is; Geysir; s/d from Ikr22,000/25,000, campsites per person Ikr1500, buffet lunch Ikr3500, dinner mains Ikr2700-5700; hFeb-Dec, campsite May-Sep; iW) bustles with tour groups tucking into the buffet lunch.

Geysir & Strokkur

Geysir goes through periods of lessened activity, which seems to be have been the case since 1916. Earthquakes can stimulate activity, though nowadays eruptions are rare. Luckily for visitors, the very reliable geyser, Strokkur, sits alongside. You'll rarely wait more than 10 minutes for the hot spring to shoot an impressive 15m to 30m plume before vanishing down its enormous hole.

Geysir Center

The large Geysir Center (%480 6800; www.geysircenter.com; h10am-10pm Jun-Aug, to 6pm Sep-May) corrales the masses across the street from the geysers. A souvenir shop of mall-like proportions with Icelandic name brands, and an N1 petrol station, share space with eateries and Geysirstofa (%480 6800; h10am-5pm May-Aug, noon-4pm Sep-Apr), an interesting audiovisual exhibition about geysers, volcanoes and earthquakes.

Surrounding Activities

Take advantage of Geysir's picturesque setting by hiking in nearby Haukadalur forest, hitting the links at Geysir Golf Course (Haukadalsvöllur; %893 8733; www.geysirgolf.is; 9 holes Ikr3000) or going salmon fishing on the Tungufljót river. On cold, clear winter evenings, look out for the Northern Lights. Many tours from Reykjavík offer these activities and more.

Adventure Tours

Want to hook up with a tour near Geysir? Iceland Safari (%544 5454; www.icelandsafari.com; Geysir), 1km south of Geysir, takes super-Jeep trips to places throughout the southwest. Or go 4km east of Geysir to Kjóastaðir horse farm where Geysir Hestar (%847 1046; www.geysirhestar.com; Kjóastaðir 2 ) offers horse riding in the area or along Hvítará Canyon to Gullfoss. Rafting trips ply the nearby Hvítá river.
